The spring session of swim lessons will begin Tuesday at the Little Falls YMCA.
Classes will be offered for infants and toddlers, along with American Red Cross levels I through V. Each class meets once a week for a five-week session on Tuesday evening, Thursday evening or Saturday morning.

Folk singer Bill Staines will perform at the Kirkland Art Center Coffeehouse at 8 p.m. Friday, April 23. Opening for Staines will be area performer Ryan Miller.
General admission is $15. It is $12 for art center members. Seating in the gallery is limited.

The Herkimer Lions Club will celebrate Earth Day by participating in the state Canal Clean Sweep program. Lions Club members will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Gems Along the Mohawk parking lot, across from the Herkimer Thruway exchange, and begin cleaning the Canalway Trail walk/bike path from MOVAC to the Fort Herkimer Church.
Any people or groups interested in participating are welcome. Bring gloves and appropriate footwear.
In honor of National Healthcare Decisions Day, Valley Health Services will offer free information about advance care planning and advance directive forms from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday in its lobby, 690 W. German St. Staff will be in the lobby to answer questions. An appointment can be made by calling 866-3330, ext. 180.
As a participating organization, Valley Health Services is providing information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends and health care providers, and execute written advance directives — health care power of attorney and living wills — in accordance with state laws. Library to offer presentation on energy conservation
New York Power Authority Community Relations Specialist Ann Cianfrocco will give a presentation on energy conservation and electrical safety at 7 p.m. Monday at the Frank J. Basloe Library. The presentation is free.
All adults in attendance will receive a reusable tote bag containing an energy tips booklet, a compact fluorescent light bulb and foam gasket insulators. Registration is required by calling 866-1733.

The American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley will offer baby sitter’s training from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at its office at 235 N. Prospect St.
Baby sitter’s training is an interactive program geared for youths ages 11 to 15. The training will include a baby sitter’s guide book, a CD-ROM that includes additional downloadable materials and an emergency reference guide.
The cost is $32. Participants should bring a bagged lunch and drink, along with a doll or large stuffed animal to practice diapering techniques.

I Can Cope offers help to those dealing with cancer
The American Cancer Society and the Faxton-St. Luke’s Regional Cancer Center will present the spring 2010 session of I Can Cope from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, beginning April 29, at Roselawn Banquet Facility, 446 Main St., New York Mills.
I Can Cope is an American Cancer Society program that will provide information about cancer diagnosis and treatment, and assistance in coping with the physical and emotional challenges of cancer. All classes are free.
Participants can attend any or all classes. A dinner buffet will be offered.
The New York State Consumer Protection Board can help you safely dispose of your unwanted records and documents at its free public Shredding Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in the parking lot beside Aqua Vino Restaurant, off North Genesee Street.
Confidata of Utica will provide shredding services free of charge. Consumers and small businesses can bring personal documents to be shred — paper only, no discs — with a limit of approximately three cartons per person.
The Mohawk Valley Council on Alcoholism/Addictions Inc., in partnership with the Oneida County Dual Recovery Coordinating Council, announced a Wellness Program for Care Giving Professionals on Wednesday, April 28, at Aqua Vino Restaurant. Participants can choose to go to session one from 8 a.m. to noon, or session two from noon to 4 p.m. The cost is $10.

The Mohawk Valley Choral Society’s spring concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, 2222 Genesee St.
Titled “Songs of Faith,” the concert will present the “Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo” (the “Little Organ Mass”) by Franz Joseph Haydn and a selection from Aaron Copland’s opera “The Tender Land.”
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the concert and are available at the Stanley Center for the Arts box office, at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts in Little Falls or by calling 823-1615.

Drs. Adam and Valerie Ellis will offer a free workshop on fibromyalgia at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at their office in the Utica Business Park, 122 Business Park Drive.
The workshop will cover the history and common symptoms, current accepted diagnostic criteria, and nutritional support and alternative treatments.

Ilion Free Public Library will offer its “Snack and a Movie” and “Lunch and a Movie” series beginning at 6:30 p.m. today.
Films to be screened will include “The Blind Side,” “Sherlock Holmes” and “Precious.” Matinee showings are at 1 p.m., beginning Friday. Bring a sack lunch. The library will provide a snack and beverage for the 6:30 p.m. showings, and dessert and beverage for the matinee showings.
